The Buzz: Pharos Pocket PC Navigator mapping and route computation software bundled with iGPS-180 receiver from Pharos

Pocket Navigator from Pharos is a new mapping software that has the ability to calculate routes to and from user-defined destinations and origins. The software, which requires proprietary .rmp map files for geographic information, is GPS ready, meaning that it can work in conjunction with the company's optional i-180 GPS receiver. The dashboard mountable device boasts instant reacquisition following the loss of a satellite signal, as well as a compact form and water-resistant casing.

More to come as we begin to test the software and its bundled GPS receiver. Will this "true total GPS solution" with advertised features such as one-touch Re-routing, voice prompting, satellite constellation display, and "detailed street level mapping data" hold up in real world "Where the hell are we" situations?

For the time being, here are some screen shots to wet your palette for GPS guided roadtrips

The main body of settings and navigation within the software and its different views.

As one zooms in, street names appear beside the streets to which they belong.

After specifying a point of origin, a destination, and allowing the software to compute a New Route, the entire route with the origin and destination is displayed.

Turn by turn directions can be viewed, voice prompts are enabled when using the GPS receiver.

This separate screen displays data gathered by the receiver, specifically its longitude, latitude, time, speed, and distance.

Satellite view gives the user an idea of where the satellites from which the receiver is tracking and the signal strength for the 12 useable satellites.
