My Thoughts
Having had the pleasure to review
this latest major upgrade, I am certain that this PIM solution
has definitely gone from a Pocket PC software pioneer of
a version 1 to what is now a more mature and streamlined
mid-version 2. All Views are concise, clear, and aesthetically
pleasing in somewhat of a Spartan, Utilitarian fashion.
In terms of usability, stability, and features, it's everything
it should be, and offers several unexpected tweaks as well.
The View-specific controls are all in the right place, with
extraneous buttons and icons nowhere to be found. The abundant
options allow the user to specialize their PIM experience
as much or as little as they like.
Evidently, with Pocket Informant,
less is more. On my device, smallish screen, stylus recognition,
and all, the user experience is much more pleasant than
the mess that is Outlook XP (which to its credit, is better
than Outlook '97) and makes the Pocket PC PIM applications
duck their sorry, feature-deprived heads in shame.
The price is nothing to quibble
about, as Pocket Informant may prove to be among the few
great bargains in the world of Pocket PC software. The frequent
updates alone, which are continuous improvements rather
than patches for incomplete software, justify any perception
of bloated cost. A certain peace of mind comes from knowing
that Web IS and eager beta-testers are working relentlessly
to improve the product.
Is this piece of software perfect?
With no blatant omissions or shortcomings, the answer remains
'no', for the simple reason of holding out for something
even better; I'm sure Pocket Informant 3.0 can fill those
shoes. The software can and will improve in future iterations,
but at the moment, I have no complaints.
