The Buzz: A comprehensive replacement for Pocket Outlook that is both robust and effective
Developer: Web Information Solutions (Web IS)
Availability: www.pocketinformant.com for Pocket PC
Price: $19.95
Editor's Rating: 5 / 5

Pocket Informant by Web Information Solutions is designed to serve as a full replacement for Pocket PC's built-in PIM applications (Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks) in one integrated solution. The self-executable, 2-Week Demo version gives potential buyers a taste before taking the plunge. Registration codes are used to disable the time-limit.

To realize the tremendous amount of functionality that can cater to the Pocket PC novice to the Power User and anyone in between, there is an extensive use of contextual tap-and-hold options and view-specific options in the clean and uncluttered interface. A variety of options allows one to customize Pocket Informant extensively, and for many, the default settings will work just fine.

The application offers five views: Agenda, Week, Month, Tasks, and Contacts, each accessible by tapping the appropriate tab situated below. Only the Settings (hammer) and Categories options are present in all Views. Tapping the hammer unveils a plethora of logically and clearly grouped choices: Program information (About, Registration), View and Program options, category and template editors, access to Alarm Notes, Refresh Data, Delete Completed Tasks, Receive via Infrared, and a Close command.

Agenda View

This View shows upcoming appointments for a specific number of days, with the option to hide dates without appointments. Single tap options include settings, return to present day, date navigation, linking, and categories; these options are preserved in the Week and Month Views as well. Appointments marked as Tentative have a light blue margin, Busy as blue, Out of Office as green, and All-Day events as grey. In customizing the view, one can decide upon the number of days displayed, text size, and whether icons or ISO week numbers are displayed.

Week View

Week View shows the seven days of the week, with either Monday, or the currently selected day as Day 1, which occupies the largest rectangle at the top. Alongside each day are options for New Appointment, New Task and Hide Tasks, as well as the number of Tasks for that day in brackets. Similar to DeveloperOne's Agenda Today, appointments and tasks can be dragged and dropped from one date to another. The same Tasks options from Agenda View are preserved. Week View Layout options include the orientation of the grid, text and Day 1 rectangle sizes, and icon display choices.
