For some time now I have been developing locally using my wireless LAN and now feel comfortable enough with the setup to recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who hankers to ditch the wires. In the beginning the goal was to develop against my iPAQ without the inconvenience of the cradle, USB it may be, but slow was it's middle name. The wait for the PC Card jacket was agonizing but it eventually arrived and I was set. An amazing testimony to the rate of technology churn is that at the time that I embarked upon this quest, which was five short months ago (Sep/Oct 2001) there were very few wireless LAN products in the affordable SOHO category.
In my books affordable would be around the $500 mark - a far cry from the $1200 from a few months earlier. So the choice was easy, Lucent had just released out their RG-1000 residential gateway. I bought the RG-1000 with a single Orinoco silver PC card. The difference between the 'silver' and 'gold' cards by the way is the supporting encryption, the gold is about $10 more and supports encryption using a 128 bit key. My first challenge at that stage was finding drivers for WINCE 3.0, since the provided drivers only supported WINCE 2.1. This was easily fixed by emailing one of my Lucent contacts.
