Transfer data into Pocket Access on your Pocket PC.

The goal of this tutorial is to get your Access data onto your Pocket PC using MS ActiveSync®. This will:

  • transfer the data onto your Pocket PC so that applications can be written against the tables
  • show you how to keep desktop and Pocket PC tables synchronised

With MS ActiveSync® running and connected click on Tools -> Import Database Tables.

You will then get a screen asking whether you want to import an Acccess or ODBC database. I'm going to select the sample Northwind Access database provided by Microsoft. Click here for a copy of this database otherwise locate it on your drive in the c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Samples folder. Note you can choose ODBC and import data from any other database that has a DSN on your system.

You will then get the following dialog...

This is an important dialog, it allows you to specify where the database will be copied to and what tables will be transferred. Copy and paste the text in the location text box (\My Documents\Northwind.cdb). Next select the Customers, Order Details, Orders and Products tables. Uncheck the option to keep the tables synchronised and click OK. You will then see the Copy and Convert dialog below as the data is converted into cdb format.

To confirm that the data has been copied click the Explore button in the ActiveSync window.
